Does anybody know of or where to find the identities of the various colours used for the targets displayed by AIS? Are these colours set to a standard or is it simply at the descretion of the plotter display manufacturer?
The different colours are all very pretty but I reckon that they should mean something

My Plotter (Northstar 567) shows Orange, Green and Magenta symbols. The only correlation between them seems to be speed. Orange being fast 15 or so knots, Green 10 or so and Magenta generally slow vessels under 10 knots. I have no information as to whether by guestimate is correct or not.

Don't know if this is of any use, but it has the live AIS data for the UK. Different ship types are different colours... a very good site too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the various bits of info. there seems to be some detail available for the colours for different types of ship but I am still serching to see if there is a definition of colours laid down in an AIS specification. Any further help would still be appreciated.

I just updated my navigation software Fugawi to their latest release 4.5. One of the enchancements they made was:

"AIS vessel graphical representation changed to conform to
IMO standard".

I was not able to find something on these standards but in Fugawi the default colours are:
Green: Moving
Yellow Stationary (< .5 knts)
Red - Dangerous
Orange - Lost signal
