Have a look at this site, it is tracking AIS world wide.

Use just like google earth by zooming into an area, click on the boat and it will open up to show you pictures of the vessel.

Probably not safe for work as you will get sucked into it for ages.

not safe for nav either as it's delayed data; but I too will admit to finding it facinating - esp when an incident is flagged up such as that collision a week or so ago when you could watch the 'players'

There is an app for the iPhone or iPad that does it as well

Not all the time it isn't, I've been using this site for a while now as I can get to the docks in Hull in 5 minutes to photograph the ships - much better than sitting on a cold river bank waiting for them to arrive...
