I know the Hamble gets crowded but how does a 591m Patrol Boat turn round?
AIS history shows the 'Southampton Patrol' going up and down the Hamble.

Also, is it sensible for a law enforcement boat to be clearly marked as such (with speed and heading info) on AIS... anyone up to no good could just track it and chuck any dodgy gear over the side if an intercept looked likely

More like 59 feet than 591 metres. Yes, it does poodle up the Hamble sometimes, deafening every body as it goes.

I wonder if the owner of the good ship Salena, which looks as if it is sitting in someones front garden in Dumbarton, knows the AIS thingy is still switched on....

Well it's stated length on my AIS is 13m. There is a batch of AIS equipment in service that can cause a wrong identity to occur. There has been an NM about it. I think that this is a likely cause as to why your Southampton Patrol would get stuck in the Hamble River.
