I'm after a dual channel AIS engine - not the NASA one that receives one channel at a time though ....
Any recomendations?

Ta

I changed to the Comar AIS-2-NMEA engine and its far more sensitive than the NASA one (along with being a dual parallel receiver).

if its into a Raymarine C series, you ll need another box of tricks too..
I see Digiyacht have just brought out a new product.. cant recall all the details, but I think it also has a gps antenna and is upgradable to transmit too...
I have the Comar Multi
What I do notice is the number of vessels transmitting incomplete or wrong data (eg under way, when at anchor), and in busy waters, the thing is alarming, non stop ! Still, makes you take another look about /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Not sure why you rule out the NASA Engine. In the real world i.e. the shipping lanes (not the (over)crowded Solent where eyeball is much more use than AIS), the NASA engine has never failed, in 3 years and many passages, to detect targets of interest. Why pay 3 or 4 times more for dual channel when it doesn't actually provide any real benefits where it matters (from my experience)!

Its not Raymarine C series - it's for Standard Horizon - straight forward NMEA input at 30k baud. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Because I had a Nasa AIS engine before - the first one was duff and quite a few ppl I know had duff ones ... ok - it was replaced FOC, but it was quite annoying having got the target to have to wait a further 10 minutes for the rest of the details ... then it changed when the ship got closer ... also there was a bug in somewhere between the AIS engine and the SH that made the SH reboot when you tried to get the details of certain ships ...
As it is only ~2x cost of the NASA for a dual receiver I'll get a dual receiver!!

Understood. However, I think you were unlucky.
Do you believe a 2 channel receiver will overcome the bug in the SH system?
I feed the NASA AIS data into a laptop (through a serial to USB converter) running Yacht AIS and have had no problems.

Re: AIS engines & Raymarine C Series

Slight correction - nothing extra is needed for the C Series if you use the EasyAIS receiver. This unit has a built-in multiplexor so you can take NMEA data ( fast heading data etc) into the EasyAIS box and the output to the C Series has both AIS and NMEA data. Saves a lot of cash for a box that is not required. I have had this arrangement for a year now and no problems.

Having just installed a SH CP 300, one of my 'Things To Do' is put the NASA (Mk2) data into it - you've just put me off ! I am planning to keep the PC at the chart table receiving the same data anyway, so its not mission critical to me - will report progress.

I'll let you know what we get and how well it works ...

btw - I've had a PM from someone with a SH unit with NASA AIS engine - and he gets the reboot problem too ...

I'm looking at the Nav possibilities for the boat - atm it's only got Radar(if/when it works)/Chartplotter on the binacle at the helm along with the tridata & autopilot (ST4000).

I hate being sat forward and not being able to see the depth/speed/log info - so I've got a second Tridata to sit next to the Wind (ST60) to the side of the companionway and looking to put our SH on the opposite side because 1) I've got one, 2) it gives the crew something to play with & 3) it will provide AIS data (which cannot be integrated into the helm station).

Down below there is nothing at the chart table - I have purchased a Yeoman Nav Pro (I hope it fits on the table!), for now that will probably do, although I might add an ST60 tri/graphic and a PC ... eventually ...

what is this Nasa dual channel, I have a Nasa AIS engine connected to my C120 and I get a long list of targets with all the details, some times the details are not accurate and exclude the ships name which is a pain, so if you need to call the ships, as I did 4 times last Friday crossing from Salcombe to Guernsey I have tried to enter the MMSI number but this can take some time and I have found that the ship ignors the DSC call but if you call the ships name I got an answer directly. Insedently I picked up my first yacht on AIS it was a racing yacht with the Number 53 on it travelling hard on the wind from east to SW possibly towards Biscay, anybody know what event it would be there were at least two on board.

The NASA engines are dual frequency single channel engines - they only listen to one of the 2 AIS channels at a time - swapping between them quite frequently ...
So - basically you're only getting 50% of the information - most of the time this doesn't matter as you generally have position, course and speed to plot - what you miss, and what you've found out - is the static information can take an age to appear ... which isn't helpful!

The reboot problem on SH plotters is a fixed by a software update available FOC from SH - if the plotter is from last year or earlier/old stock give them a call if you have not updated your software to check - they send the data out on a c-map type card so you will need to give them credit card details in case they don't get it back!

Also you should note that the fixed data (ship name etc) is only transmitted every six minutes so it will take some time even with a dual channel rxr.

I did have a software update - but it didn't fix it ... I'll see if it continues to occur with a different engine...

so - you could potentially miss it several times when you (r engine) switch(s) between channels ...

Seemed to fix it on mine....

Always possible but does not seem to happen, mind now getting p***ed off with the class B being fitted that are increasing the number of CPA alarms (partic when they leave them on their moorings) andthis is in North Wales not the Solent!
