To those of you who use AIS: what values do you set for the CPA and TCPA thresholds?

I would think something like 1nm within next 30 minutes would be OK. I have no practical experience with AIS but plan to use it soon.

Thanks

I tried setting my Standard Horizon CP180i to 0.5Nm in the next 10 minutes - although not much point in the solent ... but it didn't really appear to work ... cos it was triggering boats for the 0.5Nm but ignoring the 10minutes, then did the 10minute warning completely separately - turned the alarms off after that point...

I have set mine for two miles and the time to be compatible with the fastest thing I am likely to meet locally ... hydrofoil at 30Knts. So, set for 2 miles and 5 mins.

I did have them set for 5 miles but found this triggering annoyingly for traffic that I had already decided by eye that would pass clear.
And the more annoying thing is (on the Ray C70) that about 30 secs after accepting the alarm it goes off again !!!!!!!!!!! and again .................... and again!

Same on the Standard Horizon - I think it is where the target and your data is updated, moves out of the target zone/time frame and then comes back in ....

On the Standard Horizon there is another 'problem'. When an alarm sounds, try to find the ship (on the chart display) that set off the alarm!
In the alarm pop-up you see the name of the vessel, but on the screen you only see them when you hover over them with the cursor.

Ah - the little triangle representing the ship Flashes - so zoom out until you see a flashing triangle ... yes - it could be a lot better, perhaps the chartplotter software dev would like to start a userforum to discuss the various anomalies!!
