Despite being scupulously cleaned, the paddlewheel is getting stuck on my 2 year old DST-800. It starts off OK and then mid-passage I just get 0 knots. I think a tiny piece of shell or other debris has got between the hub and the shaft so I'd like to remove the paddle wheel.

To avoid breaking anything, what is the correct method?

The paddlewheel axle has a small groove around it on one end; this end should be located on the outside. Use small wirecutters to grip the end of the axle and pull it straight out. Note which way the paddlewheel is mounted - it will only work properly one way round.

While you have the axle out, take the opportunity to antifoul the paddlewheel and its housing. I also find it's useful to rub the axle gently with some fine wet & dry paper.
