I have a volvo 2001 diesel which has a fairly basic air intake without a paper air cleaner.

It seems to amplify and ‘trumpet’ the noise, and although I like the engine, this bit seems poorly designed.

Any ideas how I could quiet things down a bit ?

Is there perhaps a material I could shove down it that would still let enough air in ?

Any ideas or thoughts would be welcome.

I would want some form of filtering to prevent solid matter goining into the engine..

even if it was only the mesh from a pair of tights.

First of all, dont 'stick something down it'. That will restrict the air supply, reduce the power and cause black smoke. In any case it would almost certainly get sucked into the engine with - er- interesting results!

The best way will be to put a silencer on it. Check the diameter of the air intake, then go to the car breakers, and get an air filter housing and intake hose of suitable size - probably from a diesel car to get the size right. Oversize will be better than a close fit, if you can invent a way of sealing it on to your air intake. You dont need to fit the paper filter, as there is very little dust in the marine environment, but some sort of gauze to stop larger objects being sucked in is quite a good plan.

My old Sherpa diesel van had a loose connector on the suction side of the air filter, and sounded quite sporty whenever it came off!

The metal filter on your 2001 should have a metal mesh element inside it, and you're supposed to oil this periodically so any dust particles will stick to it. Don't be tempted to stuff anything else inside it. The 2003T uses a plastic air cleaner which has some foam plastic inside it. It's probably the same mounting diameter, so it might be worth asking a Volvo Penta dealer whether the plastic filter would fit your 2001. That might cut noise a bit.
