Many thanks to the helpful replies to my post on this topic last week.

Here is what we did on the engine at the weekend.

Tank vent, tested, satisfactory
Tank siphoned, inspection panel removed, 1 cm of cruddy slime removed. ( a really filthy job especially when hanging upside down through the lazarette hatch)
New primary filter, old one filthy and perhaps not seated very well
Flexible pipe, lift pump to high pressure pump replaced, replacing the jubilee clips with another type of clip which seem to apply an even pressure aroun the whole circumfrence of the pipe.
All other pipes, joins, unions, carefully inspected
Whole system pressure tested
Bleed the whole system

And then the engine ran ....and ran.....and ran
After 4 hours we decided it was maybe "problem solved": the longest it had gone before was 2 hours.

Off to Stornoway from the most excellent Glenarm next month, I guess I'll get an opportunity then to find out if we have fixed the engine.

Thanks again
Good sailing

Dear Ockle
Delighted to hear the news. I am also in the grip of diesel joy having finally completed getting all the crud out of my tanks and pipes, changing all filters and eventually getting all air out of the system. It's a wonderful feeling.
