I am changing the air filter on my 6 cyl turbo diesel from a box with a paper eliment to a pancake type as the box type is not big enough, but what need to know is the pancake is a Wire gauze filter that has to be soaked in light oil before it is used and would it be ok to use on a turbo as it is only a few inches from the turbo fan ?

The amount of suck going through there will soon dry off any excess oil ! I think you will find a huge increase in noise as very little silencing from a "pancake" Vs a paper filter. (IMHO)

can't you fit a remote paper typefilter ,try a local commercial breakers yard, most lorries have remote filters and you would probabally pick up suitable reiforced hose etc as well.
as said it would be noisy with a pancake and i'm not sure if they are are designed for turbo application,
if the wire broke up would you want it to go through your turbo, why do you think the filter you have is too small?

the donaldson box that is on at the moment was off a 4 cyl perkins gen, and when i take it off i get more revs , and i will go to the lorry breakers and see what i can find.
