can anyone please explain to me what exactly is an air draft! it is a requirement for MCA OOW that a boats' "air draft" be listed. it is listed in the same context as loa, beam, etc. etc......

Speaking as a member of the Stuck under Bursledon Bridge Club, understimating your air draft can be rather unfortunate, especially on a rising tide.

You should understand a vessel's listed 'air draft' in the context of a bridge's - or a suspended powercable's - safe overhead clearance ( or 'air draft' ). This latter is depicted on marine charts - see your national authority's publication of IHO Symbols as adopted in 1982 and amended subsequently.

Small vessels are too frequently hazarded, in many river estuaries, by overslung power cables 'sagging' - sometimes with fatal results.
