Aha, not a head gasket

Posted on here a little while ago about the starboard engine way down on power and overheating, thought it was probably a head gasket (10.4 V8 diesel). When I removed the lightweight cast iron exhaust manifold from the left bank of cylinders I at first thought oh [--word removed--], there's a piece of piston skirt wedged in the exhaust. After I recovered I had a closer look and it wasn't skirt but lots of exhaust shaped pieces of carbon!
When I cleared it out the whole exhaust was blocked for a couple of inches from where the manifold joins the exhaust, it does narrow down there to a piddly 1.5 inches!
I think this may have started when I found the turbo had stuck a couple of months ago and it gradually built up from there (maybe).

alot cheaper than a head gasket,replacement its nice when things turn out better than youfirst suspect ,no doubt a well earned pint in the pub afterwards to celebrate a job well done,

A bigger exhaust will not only eradicate this problem, but also provide more power.

I went berserk and took Albert for a walk to celebrate, big relief!
The worst thing about it was getting rid of that dirty, grimy feeling and being afraid of getting some of the carbon on her carpets.
The bad news is that it finished off my engine room slippers! Time to relegate my current one's to that duty and invest in a new pair of comfy SOLAS approved ones.

Glad you found the problem alec. Good clean out and you'll be away again in no time!

Stuck turbo might have caused overfuelling, and therefore a build up of carbon deposit. Or just a build up over the years...

Cheers Alex, I'm going to change that turbo as its whining at times and I've got a spare, once I've managed to get it off its manifold!

I saw you showing off with that coal ship going into Kingsnorth on the way back from Burnham while we had to wait for it to pass us!
