I have a Autohelm ST6000 pilot with the linear drive type 2; it is equipped with a Fracmo motor ref 452.02.136, whose brushes are Raymarine part N034.

I read that when the brushes are too old/worn, the motor stops functioning all of a sudden, with no warnings.

Raymarine (europe) is selling the two brushes for 50€. Which may be considered a lot of money for a spare part one might (hopefully) never need.

Fracmo sells the same brushes for £2.5 each, hence it is 100% original equipment, two brushes £5 (+p/p..) might be considered as a very cheap insurance in case one needs sudden replacement in the future.

The problem is Fracmo only accepts orders >£100...

anyone else interested in buying a couple of these things ?

Morgan Electrical Carbon, part of Morgan Crucible manufacture and sell carbon brushes http://www.morganamt.com/gb/Products-and-Materials/Carbon-Brushes.htm

They may help.

If not there are lots available on ebay. They are readily sanded to fit. Presumably they are a plain soft carbon?

Damaging wear occurs usually when brushes wear down such that metal rubs on the commutator or slip rings.

thank you,

indeed I had found the following comment:

"Brush is Morganite Electrical Carbon 6x10x20, grade CM9/M50-5113, they are labeled with "5113""

I just fear that going up the distribution chain would be like asking a supertanker to buy a couple of litres of petrol for the outboard :(

I used to but direct from them for somewhat larger (half a ton or more) electric motors. They were quite expensive but they were large brushes.

Sorry to open up an old discussion, but more than 10 years later I find myself in the same boat as you guys once were. Looking for brushes for my Type 2 linear actuator. Mine aren't worn out yet but being 12 years old they must have some wear and I'd like to replace them over winter before they start damaging the commutator.

I've found just one supplier in Holland advertising the Raymarine branded spare but they are nil stock and quite expensive if they did have them.

Everyone seems to want to sell the whole motor. Morgan's have a min order value of £300 these days and I found a 3rd party also in holland who say they can get them made with the correct grade carbon but they have a min order quantity that would cost £140.

I've written to Raymarine UK support and they've not replied.

It seems crazy that these are so hard to get hold of. There are a few on t'internet that may well work but if the compound is too hard I've be left with no commutator so risky to try.

Did anyone end up getting a few that they are willing to sell or find a solution?

I have just re-brushed a range of motors in my garden gear (does it really matter if garden or boat ??) .. NONE have brushes currently available over counter.

I measured the size of correct brushes and bought next size up ... made sure that any spring / metal contact was 'modifiable' to fit ... then sanded the brushes down to fit ...

3 garden motors .. total of about 10 euros and 1 hour of my time.

IIRC - it is a long time ago now - after my debacle with these brushes I purchased from ebay some brushes for a VW Polo wiper motor. Same dimensions, different termination, but easily altered. Never needed to use them-see below.

For what it is worth, my brushes had worn so the springs bottomed on the brush box edges, so not providing enough pressure.

A clean up of the brush end of the motor and commutator plus a judicious right angle .'bend' placed in the ends of the springs ensured good contact for the future. It worked for years afterwards, until we sold the boat. The brushes had plenty of 'meat' left, but poor design meant poor brush contact when only slightly worn. Proper motors have slots for the springs in the brush boxes, a la Lucas/CAV/Bosch so dont suffer this problem.

Yes I've seen brushes for sale that are the exact same dimensions used in power tools but if the compound is too hard it can wear the commutator out before the brush (seen it before with an alternator slip ring) then you're into big money so a little nervous taking the trial and error route.
