I recently purchased a Macwester 26 and would like to find year of manufacture - she has an official number and registered tonnage so who or where can I ask with this info ?

No paperwork with the boat

Thanks

The owners association would be a good start. However many older builders did not keep any records, or the records have been lost and pre 1998 there was no requirement to have any identification on the hull. Some builders used sequential sail numbers for each design, others used build numbers that were not directly related to a specific model but were allocated just to control the build in production, for example for allocating components to particular boats.

The Part 1 registration would be a good indication as this is usually close to the original launch date. However, if the registration has not been kept up the record will probably be lost.Try the registrar in Cardiff. Otherwise get your deerstalker on and follow up what clues you might find.

400 were built between 1964 and 1972 so the sail number should give you some idea of the rough age

I have a mid-70s copy of the Yacht Register (can't remember what year) so if you can give me a name I can see if she's in it. Assuming she hasn't since been renamed, of course.

thanks all, will look at owners ass and sail number - prv, no name on boat but was told by vendor " cestrian lady " whether original or not i could not say thanks

The Part 1 Registration Number may not exist on the current MCA files if the Part 1 has expired before the advent of the computer data base. However, you can apply for what is called a Historic Transcript for a fee of £32.00 from the register of shipping at Cardiff (Email from the MCA website). Prior to the move to an electronic data base all registry details were on big books, which have now been transferred to the national archive for this data at: -

Tel: 023 8022 3855
Fax: 023 8083 2156
E-Mail: city.archives@southampton.gov.uk

The more information you supply the better, but they can search on number only. It's a manual search of the books so expect to pay a fee.

I have used both the MCA and National Archive to trace the ownership of my own yacht using the above procedure. I paid around £30 to have the pages photographed from the archive.

Best of luck,

Is the sail number a secret?

Just as an aside, why do you want to know the age? I've had a succession of older boats and apart from determining what precise model they were I regarded the condition as more important than the age.

jeez, who rattled your cage or did you get a puncture - no it's not a fagging secret but i'll be sure to find out and let you know - all sorts of reasons for wanting to know age - primarily for insurance - hope that's ok with you

Not sure lack of knowledge of exact age will have any influence on insurance. Just a box to put a figure in so putting 1970 instead of 1974 won't make any difference at all.

OK.

If you come on a forum and ask questions, perhaps best to give as much info as possible as someone may have answer, given the details.

If you come on a forum and ask a question it is perfectly valid for someone to query your reasons.

If you come on a forum and ask questions, then get arsey with the response, it may colour others' view of you.

Perhaps you have just taken against me personally.

Yes, perhaps you're right - after receiving helpful posts from all the other posters I found yours quite rude and your latest condescending.

Don't know sail number and don't know why you need to know my reason for asking - date of manufacture is asked by insurers and maybe I just want to know, quite a normal question I would have thought and hardly warranting an addition to your post count.

We have a Macwester 26 and she was built in 1966

An odd question, but are your winches on an angle? I know that the MarkII had some different design features and that's one I remember. Another is the cockpit lockers. How are yours accessed? That might help determine whether she's a MarkI or II

Hi sailingmonkey, winches don't seem to be at an angle and cockpit lockers accessed by simple slightly tapered top entry wooden lid

Thanks - the mystery unfolds more

Suit yourself. I won't try and help then.
