Does anyone know if there is an upper age limit imposed by companies hiring cruisers on the Broads ? Friends have been told there is.Have found no web information on this so far.
Any info. appreciated.

Haven't hired for years but we are based in the area and whilst I know there is/was a minimum age requirement I have never heard tell of an upper age limit. Not sure one could be imposed although I don't think that boat hire would be covered by equalities legislation. There may be something about mobility/ability I guess.

Easiest thing would be to make a couple of calls to hire companies.

As your 166 guess you might have mobility issues so they might not be insured for you to take charge .you'll have to get your dad to hire one for you

It's usually driven by insurance companies. The Tall Ships Youth Trust has two limits, one for coastal voyages and a lower one for ocean passages outside of helicopter medivac range, both imposed by their insurers. I'm aware of exceptions being made there on the condition of a medical check and doctor's certificate (at the individual's own expense).

Age is a poor proxy for health really - there are plenty of fifty year olds more likely to keel over and die than some 70 year olds I've sailed with. But a blanket limit is simple and low risk and easy for the companies involved.

Pootling along the Norfolk Broads is hardly much of a risk compared to stowing topsails at night in a Biscay gale though :)

Thank you all for your constructive replies.Yes ringing some hirers would do the job,but if true then 55 as upper limit is a bit strong.
In fact Fergie :blue was the colour/the moulding was roto(RM) /and 166 was the length of my P &H Capella sea kayak, sold a while ago; so good thinking but I'm neither 16 nor 66 :encouragement:

From what I saw a few years ago, the biggest risk on the broads is getting rammed by a hen or stag party, out on the p@ss. Do they have drunk idiots messing about in motor boats in Biscay? ;)
