After Raymarine?

Its interesting the replies regarding the Horizon equipment, I'm sure it is fine and hope that remains the case. But dont forget that Raymarine/Autohelm equipment has been around years and there is a lot more of it in use. So the sample is much larger and consequently there will be more problems, but as a % there can be no comparison with some of the newer makes as a) there is not enough for an accurate sample and b) they have not been in the field under trial long enough.

Out of interest the St50 equipment and SL70 radar I have which is up to 13 years old is fine (or it was the last time I looked)

Another Raymarine set of course.

. . . .well thats my experience anyway.

Fitted raymarine radar to a new (secondhand) boat for the singlehanded delivery trip in 2003. Followed instructions very carefull as was in a hurry to leave, turned it on and it worked - and does so every time I turn it on; though writing this may be tempting fate.
Very old autohelm wheelpilot failed early this year just before long cruise so fitted new Raymarine wheelpilot. Switched on, played with set up for an hour or so and off we went. Its still doing what it should.

I use both Raymarine and Garmin on various boats - both good kit, my experience has been

1. Garmin excel at GPS chart plotting
2. Raymarine excel at Radar

Garmin's PC software for route planning, waypoint managment, upload, download, etc is imho far superior to RayTech or Navplanner. Garmin have entered the combi Radar space with decent offerings since 2005. Raymarine are the UK leader because most UK boat builders are OEMs for their kit. I have both systems on our current boat.

My recently acquired CP300i works very well. It picks up signals below decks & I take it up with a portable battery supply (no where to fix it yet) when needed. Its joystick make moving the cursor around very quick. It did, however have one hic up after pressing lots of buttons quickly (The boat's position became slowly displayed), but I had excellent backup from Yaesu (who advised resetting the unit, which worked). The unit shows incoming DSC message positions on the plotter, but I have yet to explerience this. It refreshes quickly. It worked after dropping it on to a hard surface too.

Can only speak for their radios which are great. SH is a brand name of Yaesu who, I understand, are a big name in electronics though unsung.
