After only 7 hours, our Mercruiser engine is terminal

If you have just had a full engine survey done after 5 months because you developed problems it sounds like you didn't have one done when you bought the boat.

From the OP "We bought our 25 year old Searay in January/February 2013 and had a full survey and service done at that time. "

Afraid I agree with the majority. It's caveat emptor in this case IMO. Get a second opinion on the motor, is it definitely a write off?

Unless the there is a big hole in the block or it's gone porous I don't see it is unrepairable. I guess the cost of repairs is going to make it uneconomic.

We could do with much more in the way of detail from the OP.

I note that the OP had planned to trade -up soon. (Posted in May)
We are new to boating this year and we absolutely love it, we are going to be upsizing in the next couple of months so we can spend more time on the boat.

if the engine has not seized remove all plugs and get some oil in the holes asap and then crank engine over with plugs removed.repeat a couple of times.to make sure oil is in the rings too.risers are widely available off ebay or from a number of people based in the uk.you can fit pattern ones which will be a lot cheaper than the originals.diy is the best way to go and if the engines terminal this can also be bought for £3500 from many uk sources.unfortunatly if the boat is used in brine 5 years is the max you see out of these manifolds but there is an australian company knocking out lighter stainless ones but their not cheap but look horny.

What a familiar situation - my colleague bought a very similar motorboat - petrol engine, 5.8L. It is his first motorboat. Engine died two days later. In the hindsight I assume it was/is old petrol/water problem.

He went new engine route. Went to the same people who did the survey for his boat(and missed the obvious), paid them in advance all the money for a new engine and some additional work on the boat - (over 6k gbp!!) in advance. The boat is still in a boatyard - no money, no new engine, no work done - it's been now 12 months :)

He's now not so keen on boating anymore...

Doesn't it annoy you when OP's can't be bothered replying to their own requests for help.

Yes. If OP can't bothered to even answer the questions that people have raised out of desire to help then I couldn't be bothered either. He's made a mistake. He'll have to sort it out himself. Caveat emptor.
