hi all i am new to this forum and new to the boating world i have always admired and loved wooden boats or as my wife calles them real boats.
now i have found i have the time to learn to sail at last and maybe a bit eagerly have my eye on a 1960s clinker built lifting keel 22ft yaght, now she needs some work i am told a paint and varnish will see her right. so firstly any advice on what to look out for on this boat and also with regards to sailing her what is the difference between sailing an older wooden boat and a newer grp boat?

I'll be amazed if paint and varnish is all that it requires. As you are inexperienced, you really do need a proper survey done on the boat to tell you exactly what work is needed on it. Don't skimp on this stage, it is most important. When you know what needs to be done, look to your own skills and work out how much of it you can do, and how much you would need to get done by someone else. Get some loose, ball-park figures of what it will cost to get various items of work done. All this is intended to put you in a clear picture of what is ahead, and whether you can manage it. Pretty wooden boats are a joy to the spirit, but behind that there is work to be done to get them into a condition where other less fortunate sailors and would-be sailors look at your boat with envy.
Peter.
