Can you recommend some affordable (-250£) bino's that have an internal compass?

Actually I learned that the best way to read a distant (height under bridge) sign is to take the digital camera (with image stabilisation), take a snap and zoom it in on the camer's screen.

I had a pair of Tascos, unfortunately now at the bottom of Cherbourg harbour, and they were very good. I replaced them with a pair from Compass Watersports which were fine until one of the adjustments became stiff, whilst under guarantee. The after-sales service from Compass was useless, it took several months of letters and e-mails [mostly ignored] before they were repaired.

Have you considered doing without the compass and getting Canon's stabilised ones? My 10x40s are absolutely stunning and though not waterproof, have lasted 8yrs well in boat use (with care).

I believe these are the same as the ones Aldi were selling in the Spring. There are available rebadged by a number of companies. Interesting to compare the prices. I think mine are brilliant.

I had a pair of those. Pretty good, and I used them for several years before justifying to myself that Steiners would be better. They are, but nothing wrong with the Tasco 54s at all.

I have only used a set of Steiners a couple of times and I don't think for everyday use on a small boat they are good value at all. I have a pair of Tascos which I find completely adequate most of the time. Not as good as my precious old Carl Zeiss 8x50s, possibly the best bins ever made but you can't get spare parts nowadays sadly.

I would vouch for Canon's stabilised binocs too. I have 10 x 30s and they are absolutely amazing...you can read boat names in a rock steady image. They do make them in waterproof models but these are very expensive. The normal ones are sub £250 I seem to remember(still expensive, but worth it), and appear to be splash proof ...(so far).

Bought a pair of 7 x 50 at Lidl in April for £9.99 including carry case, so far so good and if I had to replace every year I would not complain, oh and a handheld compass, works for me

Got a pair of Binocoms from Compass for c. £90 after they came top in a survey in one of the mags. 7 x 50, waterproof and built in illuminated compass - excellent. Tried Canon stabilised pair (£250) and found them utterly useless - sent them back.

I picked up a (new) pair of those on EBay for £58 incl delivery back in the spring - very very pleased with them.
