Hi all
I have been offered a boat with twin Volvo ad41p engines on outdrives problem is its 22 years old
Obviously I would have a full survey done on engines but at that age are they worth considering , I believe they have been regularly serviced but only 700 hours in 22years
I appreciate that the outdrives are probably the weakest link but at the price I may negotiate what cost could I expect to replace them?

Hi

This is a solid engine and probably the most durable outdrive as the steering ram is inside. If they are not corroded new seals and clutch cones and they would be good for another 10+ years. + regular maintenance of hoses/bellows. Cost 1500GBP per drive? There was also a trade in program @ 3-4K per drive (I think)

For a 200hp engine in one of the most solid ever made, its strength is in its relative simplicity there are 4 cylinder equivalents in power and age but they have more things to go wrong. But as with all boat purchases a good service history which basically shows how much the previous owner(s) looked after them is important, because they and particularly the outdrives do not tolerate neglect otherwise ££££

Thanks for the info rob so worse case scenario I'm looking at 8k for new drives mmmm food for thought
The seller assures me they have been regularly serviced and has supporting paperwork , but I will still have the engines / drives surveyed

A fine toothed comb....

Its the outdrives you really need to watch.
The newer or more modern the version of the outdrive the better, but some of the newer versions did have some silly problems designed in by Volvo.
Its not just the money but often the time out of the water rectifying problems.
A bit of sceptical and searching investigation now could save you cash and frustration.
Do not use your hard earned cash buying somebody elses delayed mantainace and hidden problems.
Good Luck.

Re: A fine toothed comb....

I have two of these. I have been told they are two of the very last AD41P-A's ever made in 2003 when they replaced the original engines.

Mine have 600 hrs on each and I've done 100 of that in the last year. They are easy to work on and run well at an OK fuel burn.

Not much to go wrong if you look after then.
