Management makes the big four-oh on Saturday, and has expressed a desire to be afloat (on the boat, not booze, befor eanyone asks).

Ideas for what to do? Anyone fancy meeting up, Solent-ish? All welcome aboard the MY Oddbins...

Re: where?

You can't beat a firework or two, tho it will need to be about 11pm before you lettem off.

I am planning a x-channel trip to deauville on friday if the weather is ok and back sunday.

Otherwise, if the weather is a bit bad with crashing waves, i will happily crash around the solent a bit, possibly crash a party provided that it's not going to be crashingly boring, and then come back ready for another crash in the lock.

What strength of wind and wave height would you be uncomfortable in with your boat and would think twice about setting out in?

Re: Diana II

i suppose 70- 80 foot planing boats will have problems going upwind into a 1metre swell - ie the perceived wave height being more than 2 metres. This can be independent of wind strenth, so in open sea it could easily be under 20 knots of wind and yet be a big swell. I have been out in an actual 27 knots gusting 35, and behind the beam it was ok, though a bit nasty when turned off for the coast. But again, the swell would be the thing that stuffs it. I turned back from a 2m swell with 30 knots on the nose in the med, thought the boat was fine, but not guests who were a bit frit!

No 1 moose drove back from hamble into a SE4-5 towards portsmouth swell mebbe a bit more than 0.5 metres so perceived waves actually over 1metre with plenty of white horses, and as we had some 40ish foot boats abeam if was noticeable that we could knock along much more comfily than they cd with spray going over their whole flybridges. Or at least, it was ok on our boat until that git ianainge used the trimtabs to soak me on the foredeck....

however, imho, powerboating should be more fun than going out in crap weather, and with a big wind it's likely to be crappy weather as well. So under normal circumstances any skipper of this sort of boat would normally find summink else to do on a windy day, or at least do something that involved not going out inthe boat.

However, on non-normal circumstances, like the delivery trip from gibraltar when we knew there was better weather further north, we did set off into f6 ish and it was ok provided we stayed under 20 knots. Too bouncy for a charter day out, i would say. So, it's usually guests, then the crew, then the crockery (in that order) that fall apart - all long before the boat, and i spose this applies to all boats regardless of size.
