Help

After seeing Villamora marina on hols - I want one of those big motor yachts. Unfortunately didnt win the lottery on return. Can anyone advise on low cost entry motor boats to investigate. Don't laugh - budget around £15K. What should I be looking for? Where should I look for it? Any advise would be most welocome.

You should be looking for a decent motor and a gang of several shootists to do a bank job. I supose you could otherwise buy a 10-15k boat in one of the mags, but they are not the same as those which you saw.

My first boat was an Albin 25 ! Great boat sleeps 4 with a diesel engine,Very good sea boat, we went to france and Belgium as well as Plymouth and Salcombe from the thams.

It is quite good to start with a smallish budget since yoiu will get a small boat and can get experince and make mistakes that are not giong to be very costly !

An albin 25 is between 5-10k

Good luck

ps You could always get on my boat and we could blow the budget on drinks ?

Saw this in VillaMoura last week...

Perhaps the tender on top will be just in budget.

Anyone identify the make of this megayacht?

Actually there's lot's of choice out there for £15K. That's all I paid for mine with the original petrols.

Look at it on my website (below) It wouldn't look too out of place in many marinas, so ignore all the advice from £200K boat owners, just remind them how much money it's costing them to leave them untouched 300 days per year!

You could try doing a search as you'll be amazed to hear your not the first person wondering how to start. Usual advice is you need to give some more detail as to where you'll use the boat, where you ll keep it (trailer too ?) and for what. On the local gravel pit for waterskiing is going to be a different suggestion to off the north coast of Cornwall. Also, you should bear in mind in your budget training and safety kit. You ll get lots of helpful (and biased ) advice,as no one ever seems to own a duff boat! But you can certainly have plenty of fun for the amount you mention. Just a word of warning.. its a bit of a bug, and it is not a cheap pasttime. Be warned !!

Hi Martyn, welcome back, see the sun was shining.

Polishing your Birchwood has worked a treat, I looked closely at the photo and cant see the holes in the transom from your old engines:)

Thanks All

I guess I like the idea of a family cruise across the channel rather than water skiing. Sleeps four would be fine. The Villamoura one might have to wait a few years? Anyone want to include me on their bank job?

Garry, the forum has got rather, er lively, recently so before someone jumps down your throat.... anything beyond some inshore boating for quite some time is not safe. New boy on family cruise to France..from Leeds? Its the kind of posting that causes apoplexy here ....

Sorry Folks

No offence meant to anyone, just testing the water for a dream. Note taken and will not undergo any such journey without relevent qualifications, is Day Skipper sufficient?

What's the problem with a newbie from leeds wanting to go x channel? As long as he knows what he's doing and does it safely, no probs. Or maybe you are referring to our self appointed safety expert?

Hi Martyn,

Having found your 'drinking Foster's' acknowledgement amongst the few random posts I chose to catch up on, I wasn't sure we were still talking /forums/images/icons/wink.gif.

Don't forget the H&A next time your passing.....

Best bet is to start off with Power Boat Level 2. A good entry point and a bloody good laugh to boot. After taking it was hooked and couldn't wait to get my boat!

Hiya Garry,

The day skipper is a perfect place to start, it'll give you a better idea of what you're up against. Once thats completed you could start to gain experience, preferably in sheltered waters first, progressing more seaward once you've gained more confidence.

Have a look at the Princess 32, they're a great family boat. The twin diesel version is really easy to control in tight spots. They've come down in price as well, I'd expect theres loads about for around 15k.

Syd :)

Garry .

Welcome. You'll have to do a lot better than that to upset anyone around here. Skin like 'gators most of them. Only word of advice , don't claim you know ALL the answers based upon reading 2 sequential copies of MB&Y. Don't lose your dream on sexseekers or princesses either, some of us have made a lifetime's dreams on that one..and a few thousand posts to boot.

Don't forget if you pick up a practical UK pass you can always charter smallish boats in the Med as you get an ICC. More than 1 of us here took that short-cut ... just I never actually bought a boat yet .

BTW - Think that boat is a Benetti - JFM and TCM ( and a hundred others) will probably put me right.

Re: Advice IMHO.

15K boats tend to come in three groups.

Newish and Petrol, fast whizzy and on a trailer. ok for day out but with mega squashy uncomfortable dolls house type accomodation.Low hull maintaince but outrageous fuel costs.

Oldish 1960/70/80 Petrol/diesel,bit slow but with acres of out of the rain space for english summer.Go nearly anywhere
ie short close to coast hops or up river jaunts for week away.Fuel cost with diesels pretty low.Princess 25 8-10k or maybe 32.Most 32s are priced around 18k with diesels
Higher mooring cost.

Ps.If there is a young lady involved(of any age).A small whizzy horrid sport boat will soon find you boating alone./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Advice IMHO.

Yp. Forget the small wizzy speed boat things. They look fun, but every one soon tires of zooming round in circles. Firt thing is, just like anything else, you have to decide what you want the boat to do. Now in my case, whatever sort of boat I had at the time. It always had to cruise. All be it, just to the local pub. Thats how we came to buy the Ospray racing dinghy, thinking it was a lot bigger than the previous 8ft thingy and would hold the dog and kids. Ok we learned to sail it and had great fun with it, even though we did capsize quite a few times!! Then we bought aa Imperial binliner type thingy with V8 petrol engine and twenty gallon fuel tank, so had spare petrol stashed everywhere for our ever expanding trips. Trying to get petrol down the hole in the transom with rolling sea and fag in mouth was interesting.
But you see what I mean about buying the right boat for the job.
