I am after some advice if I may.

I ordered a second hand sail from a sail maker in January that would require some alterations to fit. It was agreed that I would phone them two weeks later to check progress and arrange delivery.

I phoned as agreed, to be told the sail was on the loft floor and would be ready in a couple of days.

A few minutes later, I was speaking to a colleague who works from another office who mentioned that they had a sail sitting in reception with my name on it!

I then spoke to the sail maker who then admitted that it had been dispatched and they arranged for collection and then delivery to my address some 350 miles away after some chasing.

Meanwhile, I checked my bank statement and they have taken over double the amount of money agreed from my card in three transactions.

I have been chasing for a response in relation to this.

To make matters worse, due to the dry weather last weekend, I got the sail out in the garden and the alterations are wrong and the sail which was sold on the basis of being a code 0 doesn’t even measure as one, as the half width is exactly half the length of the foot. Not the required 75%. They were aware that it was for IRC purposes

I have been phoning and sending email only to be told the person is not in, will call me back within 24hrs etc, etc.

It has got to the stage that they dont answer my calls, it rings and rings. If I then phone on another phone with a different direct dial number they answer!

Any suggestions as what to do??

It sounds like you used a debit card, not a credit card...... If you used a credit card you could claim back form the credit card issuer.

The string of excuses sounds precisely like someone who is robbing Peter to pay Paul. That is, in the frantic last throes of trying to keep his business going.
Time to get legal (or the threat of legal)

That's interesting. It seems to apply to Debit Cards, but not be a legal instrument, just the issuers' own rules.
I wonder if it always works?

I would get in the car and visit them too; not setting out to be nasty, but to see what the situation is, ie anyone still working there or is the door swinging open with tyre tracks heading for the ferry !

Definitely time to get legal in some way, and certainly say you will name them here if they don't play ball.

If they wont speak to you, don't hang around. That's theft, plain and simple. Mr Plod time.

I thought ...

I was rereading a thread about sails then realised this is a new thread ... don't suppose this sail maker is Devon based by any chance?

Thanks for the advice, I am not sure if it is coincidence since posting this but they have been in contact, well I phoned them and they answered and actually agreed they had made a mistake and have agreed to repay the whole amount by Friday. Time will tell. If they don’t then I will be going round on Monday being as I am in Devon.
