Hi all, got to the boat this weekend after a weekend away so it's been there for circa 10 days without a clean. The boat was thoroughly washed down before leaving. The below is what we've found a couple of times now, a grey dust covering the boat and collecting in little mounds in some areas. Would you say this is normal for the Southampton / Itchen area or should I suspect a nearby building site overlooking the marina to be a potential source of the dirt?

We paid £1.5K for a new canopy at the start of the season so a tad concerned it may get ruined if it is building dust presuming there may be chemicals in the dirt.

I am using may, suspect and the like as I cannot say for certain that it's coming from the site but one thing's for sure, we didn't have this level of dirt build up last season before the building works started so I guess that's a clue.

Grey dust has collected in mounds where I'd laid a rope along the sidedeck

and here the same on the other side of the boat where it's run off the side deck and collected in a crevice

many thanks Gary

distinct possibility Paul, one of the reasons we left Calshot when there with the old boat on the trailer was the level of damage the surrounding area did to the boat. we moved away from the spit to go to OV to get away from muck not find it all over again

I look after quite a few boats at shamrock, they look very dirty in no time at all. There is the cement works, the gravel unloading pier, then the scrap yard with metal filings airborne all over the place, all in all a very industrial area to try and keep a boat looking clean, I'd stick with o v .

good point Paul. It'd need to be northerlies to affect OV in that case. Can't recall if we've had wind from that direction in the last couple of weeks

A couple of years ago the council were resurfacing the road adjacent to the marina, the dust accumulated on the boat within a day, to the level that when the shorepower cable was coiled away there was a distinct grey line running along the deck (similar to yourself). The boat had been given a good wash and wax a couple of weeks prior to this and so when hosed down the majority of the grit washed away.

Hi Gary, We've had the same problem on Merlin. I spoke to the marina office about it last week and was told that the building contractors were inviting boat owners who believe they were effected to contact them directly. I told the office I wasn't happy to do that as I felt my problems would be considered insignificant by the contractor, she passed my comments to the office manager.

As you might guess, I've heard nothing back as yet :(.

I'm thinking of moving on next year.
