Hi

I have completed my Day Skipper Theory and am yet to do the practical. I would like to have any recommendationas for a general book for yachting covering sail trim, passage planning, knots etc etc etc

Many thanks

James.

"The Skippers Pocketbook" by Basil Mosenthal, published by Fernhurst is a good one - Small enough to tuck away in your nav bag too.

Cheers,

Graham.

I use The Complete Yachmaster by Tom Cunliffe as a general reference. It's more of a text for reading at home than something that you'd take sailing with you, so would probably complement The Skippers Pocketbook well. I enjoy the style of writing, which is littered with the author's dry nautical wit, which I find encouraging. If you're concerned that it may be to advanced, then see if you can find a copy in the local book shop, Waterstones usually have it on the shelf, and have a flick through the pages. I was given a copy for Christmas just after I completed my Day Skipper, and found that I grew into it.

However, though there are plenty of diagrams, it's not illustrated like the RYA booklets. A lot of the explanation and learning is contained within the text, so it's necessary to read and understand what's written. It's a style I get on with and I find the explanations are clear and thorough, but not everyones cup of tea, and some may prefer more diagramatic explanations.
