We're going to a reception at The Haven hotel, which is just a stones throw away from the Sandbanks ferry at Poole Harbour entrance. We're planning on sailing there from Hamble on the Friday, but I don't think the hotel has any facilities for a 35ft sailing boat (apart from a bar for its crew!) And its years and years since I've been inside Poole harbour. Where would you safely leave a boat for most of Sat night?

Nearest marina I have found with Google is Salterns, about a 2 mile taxi ride away. Mooring buoy or marina within walking distance from the Sandbanks ferry would be much better.

Would there be any visitors moorings in South Deep? Perhaps yard moorings that might be available? Who to contact for booking? Happy to dinghy ashore and then take the ferry. Oh but maybe there are boat taxis.

Obviously we could anchor in South Deep, what does anyone think about leaving the boat unattended there?

Any help appreciated!

Leaving a Hotel late on Saturday evening after a reception. Pitch dark, unfamiliar surroundings, big ships, pissed as newts, small dinghy.

Salterns Marina and a short taxi ride (even walk 2 miles) sounds like the most sensible option

South Deep is not practical for a dinghy ride late at night, no water taxis there. Parkstone YC has visitors moorings and is a fair bit cheaper than Salterns, though a little further for taxi.
.

Go for Salterns marina or Parkstone Yacht Club for safety. You could safely anchor off Brownsea Castle to your own hook but it is a hazardous ride across the main channel from the Haven. The hotel will be brill and you will not feel like a wild dinghy ride afterwards - there is actually nowhere to moor a dinghy anyway!

Enjoy!

Another option is to go to Poole Quay Marina. This is cheaper (I think) and much more likely to have a slot, especialy if you contact them in advance. You can then use the "Round the Island" ferries which are effectively water taxis, to get you to the chain ferry slip which is by the Haven Hotel. Don't know what time they finish, so it might have to be a taxi back to the Quay.

Enjoy yourselves!

The currents and tides across Poole Entrance make it impossible to anchor there; you have to go to Goat Horn ( south of Brownsea Island) or Pottery Pier ( north of Brownsea Island) for good safe anchorage. But you will need a good tender with a reliable outboard.

I've seen boats at anchor just to the southeast of Brownsea Castle on the edge of the channel. As others have mentioned I would not like to dinghy across the entrance due to currents and the possibility that boats may not see you in a small dinghy late at night.

Just realised that this is a 13 year old thread bought to life by ChathamSailor.

Good, though as it brought back happy memories of the Haven Hotel which I used for many years for short residential training courses and conferences.
