I am crossing Lyme Bay tomorrow and will probably be off Portland Bill around 12:00 or 13:00. Wind is Southerly 2/3 occasionally 4.

I would appreciate some advice on which way to cross the point. Inshore or 7 miles off?

The boat is a 32ft MOBO

Thanks in advance

If your destination is the Solent I would go round the race. It does not add much distance and if you get the timing wrong the inshore passage can be lumpy, there are also lots of lobster pots in waiting.

There is good advice in Reeds and pilot books.

Thanks Skysail, I have some waypoints from the Waypoint Directory English Channel, but is nice to have some advice from fellow forumites.

I am hoping the tide behind me will help, I think it should be going in the same directions as me at that time?

Is your timing for slack water? The other factor favouring the offshore route is the wind direction. If you do take the inshore route and by some mischance experience total engine or drive failure, the southerly wind will blow you on to the rocks pretty quick
