Advice please on upping sticks going to the med

Seriously planning to get the boat transported to the med for 2002 season. Most likely place is SoF. Balearics second choice. I'm ok regarding transport but completely clueless re berthing. Can the panel please give me a few practical pointers on this subject like:

Am we wasting our time, will a marina take a one season only customer? Or is this a problem that can be fixed by throwing money at it?

What are mooring fees (Phantom42, say 46 foot LOA which is 14m I think)

Gardienege (sp?) seems sensible, how much?

Can you recommend marinas that would lake a lowly punter with such a tiny boat? Main criteria are security, smart not scruffy, and close to Nice airport.

Matt what's happening with your T48 slot, is there waitlist etc? Can change my name to Steadman by deedpoll just for the season and drink lots of beer so the Fr bods wont notice, and pay you some post and packing charges to compensate the damage to your reputation caused by appearance of being associated with a non Leopard/Mangusta/Pershing :) I'd even buy your Morphy Richards tele....er no I wouldn't never mind scrub that

Generally what's security like, is stuff nicked or do the gardiennage bods look after it ok?

Are the engineering facilities ok if you need stuff fixed?

Will I hate it becuz we have no aircon?

Byron can you get back to me re passarelle, see your post below thanks

Re: ooh! a punter!

We're in la napoule, which is fairly handy for Nice, 40 quid cab ride cos its 15 minutes. I have special powers in la Napoule, but zilch anywhere else. I had the opportunity to buy a berth in la Napoule, but was wuriid about the neighbours so I bought theirs too, er well not quite but anyway I have two berths which are mine til either sellem or 2021. They are fine for a 42, best pontoon of course, parking incl and it's 7k for next year from April or £100k ish. Oops I mean it's free, but perhaps you cd contribute towards the exhorbitant water tariff. The chap that is in there can git lorst from April 1, and t'other one from whenever. See? Special Powers!

Re:upping sticks advice

ahem anyway, no adverts now. Thames Valley transport are completely sorted out, and have lorries, no hassle. They're in the mags, else marine sales at port solent put me on to them. Apollo uses their lorries.

The engineering is a billion miles better in S0F, esp at Arie deBoom in la Rague where they have engineering facilities (lathes etc) at the waterside. You'd use AdeB for Fairline fixing on that coat wherever you are. Murray Bray is the commercial director there, I can give u a number.

You will not be too lowly in a 42, quite decent stuff indeed, but there's just more huge ones down there.

As for other marinas, Antibes is closer to airport, worse parking, more of a town nearby, but a bit huge. Nice: isn't, cept for a stop, Cannes likewise scruffy. Burglaries at Port Grim, as they know you aren't there. Golfe Juan smart, but remote from a town. La Napoule is closest to Autoroute, and little town, with restaurant incl a 2star where they chucked me out for having shorts, so it must be jolly good. La rague is bit cheaper, but deadish cept for one restaurant. Further west gets cheaper eg la Figurette, and St Raphael, but a bit Moonrakery thereon. Heck, I am a bit pro la Napoule aren't I?

Aircon I don't use much (cos it's busted half the time). You do need it in Spain. A zillion clever peeps can retro fit anything: I got new carpet nine feet deep incl fitting for a 1200. At easter we discovered that best way to heat is with a 20 quid fan heater. Likewise best way to cool in a smaller boats where the aircon wd make a racket anyway is probably a nice fan.

I have not had anything nicked at all. I went down for one season four years ago. Guardienage I am getting a bit stuffed on at 50quid a week, there are little men who'll do it for half that. Expect to pay half a year's berthing price for just June -August incl. I paid 5grand for transport scoast-scoast, probly 6.5 ish now mebbe.

Are you planning this yr? Or next? Colin M is coming down next week, cept since he announced that he's off on a holiday his staff have left or gone on holiday too, and being a recruitment company of course he just can't get the staff.

For this yr, you are in possible deep do-do berth wise, but my Special Powers have already got the bloke who sold me a big boat to pull a favour with someone he knew, so after someone else who had paid monthly got chucked out, a friend now can have space from June.

Re: cor blimey thanks

Matt thanks for info. We're def planning 2002 not 2001. Have indicative quotes for lorry transport at 5-6k but that part's easy not worried about that. Joking aside I'm seriously thinking about one of your LaNapoule slots. A straight rental from Steady Steadman Enterprises from April 1st through to October ish sounds interesting, rather than outright purchase (prefer to leave cash on Nasdaq than marina berths, always did like roller coasters). I need to think harder so I don't want to over promise right now but we may be interested and anyway we would fix it up one way or the other this year so you know where you stand for next year.

I have a kind offer from prev mentioned chum/client to visit his 34m in Cannes (dunno which marina, he's coming out on my boat this w/e in Lymington so I'll ask him) in next couple months so I plan to have a butcher's around the Nice area and will drop by La Napoule (as in, say to the merchant seaman qual capitan "La Napoule, James").

As you can see I know sod all about the diff marinas down there so thanks for the advice. If it's near the airport and you recommend it I'm very tempted to save myself much research time and become your tenant m'lord. I'll come back to you on it. Any chance you could say which pontoon or email it off the BB? Thanks again!

Re: ok, and colin?...

phone/call if you're interested further. I'm on mobile next week, as we're off down there. The situation is quite fluid (huge queue behind you) so no prob if you want to wait/decide by say end sept.

Rates should be less than mentioned. But, essentially we all have to charge the same, apparently summink to do with the Ler in France. Whatever the rate is for next year in the capitainerie, then it's that.

You'd be welcome to come on board for a day or so, kids camp about but warm enuf outside. We're there august 3rd and 4th week either side of bank hol, and other times in July.

SoF much better by power, as solent much better by sail. For power, an hour away takes you anywhere, but lots of good spots within minutes, qv Mr Nitpot who bought a pred63, sold it after 15months for a Leopard which has done 35 hrs in 12months because he drives it out into the bay and comes back after lunch and has never had a night away.

Anyway, we have to go off and get some biscuits in readiness for colin's visit next week, when we will rumble around at riverish displacement speed, at least until out of the marina ho ho. I still don't kno if he's there next thurs or mebbe friday...Colin gimme a call willya

Thanks. And calling Byron...

Matt that's fantastic, you are offering to solve my biggest prob (getting a berth) at a stroke without us having to deal with a single Fr bod! We'll have a committee meet at this end and get back to you, I'll give you a call.

Thx also for the offer to drop by and look round. I have no travel plans yet for this summer but I'll see what comes up. When I've fixed the day for sail on the 34m in Cannes I'll let you know but I can drop by LaNap when I'm down there, whether you're in residence or not.

Have a good trip next week. I'm Solenting this w/e then boating sw coast of Ireland next week (not in the P42, another ickle boat over there), so I'll be drenched but refreshed. Hope you track down Colin. Actually everyone's gone awol, where's Byron? Byron can you get back to me about for-sale passerelle? Matt, I assume LaNap is stern-to, right, so we need a passarelle? Fortunately we have the reinf transom already so it's just a bolt-on job.
