Not what you might think - didn't have a curry last night!

I started this hobby earlier this year with 28' twin diesel Sealine (285) and enjoy it. But, only really done fair weather stuff never out much above force 3. Rather than retire for the season, I'd like to venture out in more lively weather. What wind maxima do other forum members consider safe to take like boats out in?

It is not just the wind it is the sea state as well !

I normally dont mind going into the wind but side or back wind is not too comfortable in my boat !

But it's far more difficult than that. Which way is the wind coming from?? How good is your boat in a following sea?? How far are we going??.... F6 if it's behind me. F4 if head sea. Only cos I get fed up with bashing into it. Best way is, go out and see what it's like, some big seas are quite comfortable, others are not. Tuther thing is, how warm is it, I dont mind getting drenched if it's warm, but hate it when cold!!

...also depends on the state of the tide. The entrance to Chichester hbr can get v.interesting in even quite gentle (F3-4) southerlies if it's going out.

I would try gentle increments, try 3-4 a few times, then maybe a 4-5, and you'll soon see how things change, and find out where your comfort zone is. Owning a slightly titchy S24, I don't normally go out of the harbour if it's forecast 4-6.

we have had the same dilema, but as others say it is more what you personaly are comfortable with, there is no point in putting yourself such a great hobby! From personal experiance I know my 285 copes far better than I do with the rough stuff!

Once the Autumnal system has worked it's way through I find great pleasure in the rest of the winter, as far as the fishing goes that is. I am also convinced that the winter is on the whole more settled than our so called summer months in the UK. But I agree with HLB, keeping warm is the secret and we do it by wearing Floatation suits (best thing since sliced bread), and of course loads of hot pies and tea.

Wind is almost irrelevant in some ways. As others have said it's the actual sea state that matters. I've been out of Lymington in a F7 NW and planed all the way to the Needles on dead calm seas. Other times been out in F3 when the sea were so bad that I was down to 5knts and actively working the waves.

Go out in a variety of conditions and wind strengths and directions, and you'll soon get to know your local waters and what it's likely to actually be like before you go out. You'll also build up confidence as you go, and learn your limitations (these will come before you reach the boats limitations in all likelihood)

sorry did not get it till today when I logged into my brothers PC!

It is a pain not being able to check what everyone on here is up to, cos I know how badly they can all behave when they are not looked after!

We went up to Largs and a few other marinas yesterday for a nose about but not much going on from what I could see, we are here all next week and thinking of going to speak to our friends at caley cruisers and see if we can pinch a boat for a couple of days as I am getting withdrawal symptoms!
