A "friend" has a rather rare and sought after Volvo Penta marine reverse gear advertised on a popular auction site.
Volvo Penta Dealership in Greece has expressed an interest and made an offer.
Whats the best way of getting paid , No Paypal............... BACS ?
Will need to get buyer to pay for collection/ shipping etc and assume they will also be paying the 20% Brexit tax.

Must get the buyer to pay insurance, which is your protection if the goods don’t arrive. I got caught out sending an analogue amplifier to China which ‘never arrived’
Is the buyer happy to do a bank transfer?
The so called “Brexit tax” is import duty which not by coincidence is the same as VAT, IVA or whatever they call it in Greece.
The shipping agent will collect the tax from the buyer before getting a customs release.
Not my area of expertise so await confirmation from others

Check out Send Parcels to Greece | Postage to Greece | TNT United Kingdom

Can you not specify the price is for the item to be collected. That way shipping, taxes, insurance etc falls on the buyer. All OG's pal has to do is collect the payment and have the item ready at the back gate to be collected, after which it's not his problem (or gearbox...)

Have contacted the buyer direct and awaiting his agreement to pay for all costs getting it from my front door to his.
Last time sold an heavy bulky item costing rather lot of folding to EU , the buyer paid up front and arranged everything including a white van turning up at my front door.
No doubt much more complicated and expensive these days after "taking back control". ?

Very simple. Do NOT get involved in shipping or Greek customs. Get them to pay you, hand over the goods at your front door and bank the cheque so as to speak. Sending things across border these days is a disaster. Example: friends kindly bought me a portable ice maker in UK. I needed to get it to Greece. managed to get it VAT free here and assumed that I would pay Greek tax - 22% - to release from customs. Ha. Stupid assumption. Bottom line is that Greek customs will charge whatever they feel like and to get stuff out is a nightmare. Let the buyer deal with that. I have no idea how big the reverse gear is but if i were them i would fly someone over on Easyjet pick it up, stick it in hold and take it off the other side!!

not really Paul :)

what Hooligan above states is correct I'm afraid.
you may get away with little money on something that looks cheap and small, but a bloody 50+ kg gbox is not going to go under the radar.
you have to take the money and let them deal with the customs mess.
The buyer may (most likely!) ask you to state a low value of a s/h item in order to try and justify a lower taxable value. Catch is that value must also show up in the insurance docs so you may not want that, and they may not want to show the full value they paid.
Lately I heard that they asked for the bank transfer receipt to verify cost of item, imho it's bordering illegal but they do what they want tbh...

so, your "friend" should take the money and expect someone to come and pick it up from his house/office/marina/wherever not to be related to that at all and defo not to be held responsible to what the idiots in GR customs do.
Needless to say that since brexit I've stopped buying kit from the UK...

I've used successfully many times over the last 20odd years Mondial Forwarding to ship stuff from London to Athens. check them out. Used to do a truck every day or couple of days.
How they now deal with the customs I have no idea.

Contacted prospective buyer and basically said money first and you need to collect.
He is now finding out if the box is worth the time and trouble to get it over there.

Good move.
I got caught buying something for "a friend" when I returned from Greece to UK for winter.
I bought the item £350 and took it back with me and the " friend " didn't want to pay...I kept the item, but it was of little use to me. I didn't keep the friend.
