I'm 90% ready for a circumnavigation this year but I have been putting off purchasing charts for too long now.

I can't afford to buy all at one go. Would it be recommended to buy them as I go?

And

Would it be better to buy folio packs or separate charts?

Thanks

If you're not going to hang about in any one area for long, then my advice would be Imray C series passage charts with harbour insets.
Going clockwise, you need to buy charts to get you to where you can buy next lot,or have them sent to youi e.g. Inverness if going through the Caledonian,

Give Tim Spall a bell, I reckon that he will not be needing his any more.

Thanks for the advice, I'm starting north Wales anti clockwise and got as far down as south Wales so a lot to go.

The imray c series looks best are they the shiny ones that Timothy spall used?

I trying to find some contact information at the moment, left a comment on his blog. Time will tell thanks.

There's a DVD from memory map of all UK Admiralty charts for around £40. The cost of buying all the paper equivalents is huge but I would still want some paper passage charts and harbour plans for when the PC or power fails.

If you are raising money for charity can you not ask for people to loan or donate charts. The money you spend could go to the charity. How about asking sailing clubs.

Just a thought.

Good luck with the trip.

As you say, I would prefer charts even if it's just to plot a gps fix ever hour incase of power failure, also my laptop is rather large and lasts about 10 min on the batt.

That's the plan, there's a chance I can lend most of the charts of the Ellen Mcarthur trust, fingers crossed!

Check out Ebay :) or check out some of the places mentioned in Sam Steele's book.

We managed to borrow a load, but still ended up buying all of the outer Hebrides then not using them, folios only go up to Ardnamurchan.

The admiralty passage charts are handy Lands end to Cape wrath to Pentland firth, moray firth etc are handy if you're going that way.

You will just have get used to the fact you might only use a chart once or twice, and flog it on EBay to recoupe your costs.

To save money we went up, around Scotland, through the caley and back the way we came

When you eventually get to Scotland you will find the Clyde Cruising Clubs Sailing Directions useful, particularly for tidal stream and anchorage information. I have a spare set of older ones covering Cape Wrath to Isle of Man which I lend to passing sailors who take responsibility for getting them back when they move on.
So if that is useful PM me nearer the time.

It's perfectly feasible to get by with Imray passage charts and Reeds.

Or you could buy a complete set of 800 Admiralty charts on CD with a basic chart plotter form MemoryMap for £50.

That would be very useful thank you for your offer!

If I have to buy a few charts I think I'll buy new imray c series for sand bank areas, second hand c series for rocky areas, a few Y charts of estuaries, I have also got navionics for planning, open cpn with whole of UK cmap charts dated 2007 as well as SH cp180 c-map chart plotter.

Despite our best efforts to deter the men with the lead-lines from venturing further north - the idea of helping sassenachs to miss the rocks and thus not add to the wreck flotsam on the shores is abhorrent to the natives - the UKHO have managed to issue SC5616 for Scotland West Coast and Outer Hebrides.

Don't buy as you go, at one point it cost me £30 on buses and taxis to get a chart to cover 15 miles! Beg, borrow, but don't steal. I'm sure there are plenty of people here who can help!
