As some know , I recently bought a Debutante 21 and now have it sitting pretty on a trailer at the side of the barn . The problem is that I've realised that to move it forwards I have to negotiate an area of land that has an incline to one side as it goes down a slope . It's not a major incline but I'm worried about her falling over so does anyone know if this is likely or am I whittling for no reason

Desperate measures, T25, but would letting the uphill tyre down give you enough levelling ?

Boyscoutish, but might work.

I'd of thought for the C of G of the boat to come outside of the trailer's footprint is extremely unlikely, unless it's a heck of a slope. Just make sure the lugger is strapped to the trailer in a robust manner.

(No warranty is offered with this information, which is worth exactly what you paid for it)

I think he means the whole bit. He may be being a little disparaging about your splendid new boat. Is it a triple keel boat? If so it will sit pretty low on the trailer. It's most unlikely to fall off as a result of tipping as TK says. Do be careful it's strapped down to prevent slidy motion though as it may easily just slip off the trailer. It's easy to jiggle aboat along it's trailer when you're getting it on properly, and just as easy to jiggle it off when you didn't mean to. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks Phil , er , disparaging indeed , hadn't thought of that possibility , but we can't all own nice big white and pretty boats can we . Yep , I'll strap her down tight , and she does have three keels too

Not disparaging at all. Merely a personal term of familiarity for a small boat, my own included. A lugger being, originally, a lug sail rigged boat. Not very grand, quite homely sort of craft used on short voyages, jack of all trades stuff. Nice.

Good idea with the dingy.Bet you don't get wet when it rains

Dave, with that spred of bilge keels she would have to be on one hell of a slope before she'd tip. Probably find that you wouldn't want to drive a vehicle over the slope that would make her tip.

Just lash her down on the trailer, and maybe put some weights on the uphill side. How much does this slope slope anyway.

please excuse my ignorance on this matter everyone , but as I'm trying to move into the sailing world after a couple of trips on a very nice boat , I really don't have a clue how much weight is down under . A mobo sitting up at that height in my view , wouldn't be particularly stable , so it's a bit worrying to me . At a guess what I think people are saying is that the weight in the keels will stabilise her , am I right ? ,the angle isn't severe and I'd drive my van over it quite happily , but a little yacht sitting up there is a bit of a worry /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I worked out my CofG would be about where marked. Although I probably have a bigger percentage of the boat's total weight in the keel, it stands a lot higher than your boat.

you can see how far you'd have to tilt the trailer to get it to fall over

It may well already have been covered by expert input from my betters and masters ( sik! ), and one is struggling to imagine the exact slope profile and environs, but my modest experience with awkward boats and even-more awkward slopes suggests you *consider* a long 'restraining line' from just above the boat's CofG to a point uphill - a stake - which will hold the boat from sliding sideways ( maybe even the trailer ) if the pathway is slippery.

There may need to be a means of adjustment of the length-in-action, and this is Boy Scouts' stuff. I'm renowned far and near for this useless know-how, so if you're stuck or seriously uncertain, send me a handful of images...... that's cheap, and so am I......!!!

oops ....... didn't see the replies above while I was rytting and spulchxn' this. And refilling my glass! And refilling again, 'cos the more I refill, the more spulchxn' I need.

If you go down the slope fast enough there will not be time for the boat to fall off the trailer before you get back on the level.
