advice on foresail

I am having anew genoa made... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif... I was thinking about keeping the old furling one and having hanks added onto it and use it on the emergency forestay in "thistle" rig set up. Sailmakers quote about £100 to add the hanks. What would you're advice be? Should I do this? Or should I try selling it to buy a a second hand one with hanks on? Anyoen have any views on how useful a thistle rig whils cruising around the Channel and its coats?

Depending on size .... you could buy a s/hand sail from Seateach for less ..... I bought a good genny for my previous Snapdragon 23 for under 60 quid ... medium weight, clean and unstained ... with hanks already fitted.

How shot is the sail? if it's still in good nick, then sounds like a good deal compared with a second hand sail and is definately the right size!
I would question how many times you would use such a rig knocking about the channel though, do you already have 2 poles and all the gear, or are you going to invest in them as well?

I'd keep the old sail as it is. Use it on your furling gear for deliveries, winter sailing, etc. and keep the new one for best. If the furling gear has got twin grooves, no problem for rigging twin downwind headsails.

You don't bother to get your old trousers re-tailored, or do you?
