It's likely this has been covered previously, any advice on what treatment(s) to use in the fresh water tank, I have previously used 'miltons' but found there was residual smell from it for several months, thanks in advance. :encouragement:

Not sure if you're referring to an annual treatment but I use Aquatabs each time I fill up the water tank. The chlorine smells a bit but it still tastes OK in a cuppa!

Elsan - fresh water tank cleaner
Elsil (silver and peroxide) to keep potable water potable

No residual smell or taste and you can buy peroxide test strips to reassure yourself it's still active.

Neither have I, my water has no smell, but I have been told there are many micro bacterials that lurk around the fresh water system and not having treated the system for over 5 years thought it might be about time

Buy £4 worth of citric Acid powder from eBay, mix in hot water before pouring into full water tank, run taps until you taste Lemons, turn off and wait a few days.

Turn all taps on with a hose in the filler neck, and taste water from taps until there is no Lemon taste.

Your entire system is now perfectly descaled!

Probably best to fill with Aqua tabs as backup, but there will be no calcium deposits breeding bacteria, nor any alive after the Citric acid!

The citric acid is edible/food friendly btw so no issues afterwards.

Cost £4. Can't beat it! (My hot water element was removed, and looked like it was brand new!)

This is not about “ lime scale “ inorganic deposits are pretty irrelevant regarding the proliferation of micro organisms.
Specifically it’s the pathogenic micro organisms that you need to reduce below a disease / potentially harmful level .
Realistically total irradiation is wishful thinking .
Btw your stomach acids at PH irrc near 1 are full of bacteria ,ok mostly comensals so acid per se especially your very dilute citric acid concoction is not gonna do a great deal regarding any antibacterial effect .It may taste nice that’s all .

Answering the OP Q,we use a product called “ Aquaclean “ by Yachicon .Made in Germany.
It feels expensive at purchase 100 g costs near € 20/25 ,but it’s a powder with a measuring scoop and used correctly treats 10 000 L sufficiently enough to make it drinkable safely for humans .
Picked the words in the previous sentence carefully
Odourless and tasteless , I dose up the 500 L tank @ every fill up .

I use Aqua Sol. Treat the tank everytime. But that is just because I am OCD. I dont use the tap water for anything other than brushing teeth, showering and washing up. Bottled water for drinking.

The same make does a poweder called Puriclean which does a full clean on the tank. You put the treatment into a full tank. Leave it and then rinse it out a few times.

All available from any Chandler.

Another commercial user of hyrdogen peroxide and silver for potable water and agricultural spraying hygiene.

I use Endosan.

And some always manages to find its way from work, down to the boat. Strange :)

Excellent stuff for general onboard hygiene spraying (galley, heads, etc) and for scratches and abrasions. Especially good on barnacle cuts.

No affiliation btw.
