We are thinking of keeping our boat for a year in Brittany, preferably close to a cheap flights airport linked to Stanstead. Other requirements are a couple of good restaurants within walking distance, a good market, village rather than a town and of course decent cruising grounds. Is there anyone who could offer advice on how to start the search please, or who has experience of this area. We have heard rumours of long waiting lists for a marina berth.

Waiting lists vary. Last year I enquired at St Malo (Port des Sablons) - 7 year wait and Morlaix - no wait at all. Incidentally, St malo wasthree times the price of Morlaix, although personally, I prefer Morlaix.

Brest has cheap flights from Stansted, but Cameret as one of the nearer 'nicer' ports is not easily accessable by public transport in the autumn/winter months. (We know some people who leave their boat there for the summer) I don't rate Brest marina itself for anything but crew changes - and have used it several times for this purpose. The advantage is that it is only 10 minutes by taxi from the airport. There are one or two places near La Rochelle that you might look at if you wanted to go a bit further South...

We've just returned and prices everywhere are a lot cheaper (certainly than the Solent). Remember as well that French prices will include free electricity and almost certainly a lift out/in.

You could do a lot worse than Cherbourg. Right next to the ferry, excellent facilities in the marina and a great town. (IMHO).

Otherwise, consider Treguir. Excellent shelter being up a river. Beautiful old town. Super restaurants/market etc. Friendly. We met a liveaboard with a 31 footer which cost him £570/year (free showers as well). Probably 40 mins from St Malo by car.

St Servan (Bas Sablons marina) right next to St Malo is excellent. All tide. Real Franch town (forget St Malo itself - Disney with moules). Right next to River Rance with delights of Port St Pere, St Soulliac, Plouer and Dinan.

Hope thats helpful
