Hi all, I am currently in a position where I should be buying my first house. The thought of this however leaves me a little short of inspiration to say the least!! I know that property is the only way forward if you want to make money, but my lifestyle does not suit bricks and mortar. I would seroiusly consider a largish cruiser and live aboard instead. Do you really think I need my head read, or should I just follow my instincts??

Any views or experience would be very welcome!

depends if you intend living in your boat for the rest of your life! boat value will go down, the house value may fall occasionally, but the trend is always upwards.

Absolutely not. The housing market is completely out of control with the big lenders making stupid statements almost implying 'if you borrow from us your house will increase in value by x percent more than a.n.other lender', and offering ludicrous multiples of salary.

The simple greedy homebuyer doesn't seem to appreciate that a 4% rate rise may mean a 100% rise in their payments.

I believe that it's all going to end in tears again. It's all a legal pyramid scheme.

Semi rant mode off.

Boats, on the other hand, normally sell for more or less what you pay for them. So you lose with inflation.

Couldn't agree more!

A couple of years ago we faced the same choice - buy house, or buy boat. Needless to say we bought the boat. Still very gratefull to Mrs Yanita for agreeing.

Due to retire from the navy at the end of next year - counting the days.

Theres a better life out there

Buy the boat and go with your dreams.
I brought my flat 4 years ago and after the first 6 months I realizedthat this life isnt for me.
Now im selling the flat and want a boat, and who cares if I buy a boat and and get bored of that after 6 months. At least I can say I gave it a go.

Follow your dreams and you cant go wrong.

good luck.

Depends on your age, time scale, what cash you have, where you live at present, family, your profession, are you thinking of leaving UK?
If you are pretty handy in the diy dept, then you could buy a property for cash make some money on renovating sell and buy your boat or rent based on present house market. My house has just gone on the market, we are both in our early fifties, we are having a complete change of lifestyle, we built our house 19 years ago.
There are so many factors to consider, looking back, had I not any commitments then I would have gone on a world jaunt!

It\'s your life ....
