Just bought an Advanse RX-100 AIS receiver and want to connect it to my old laptop with a 9 pin serial socket.

I note that the wiring diag for the RX-100 shows NMEA + and - ie NOT signal and gnd. Ive read somewhere that this is NMEA 0183 v2 and that I cant simply wire up the - to pin 5 of the D connector. Is this correct ?

Same issue applies to the NMEA in on the unit because I want to connect it to my GPS and have a combined GPS/AID data stream into the laptop.
Hope this makes sense - any advice appreciated.

I'm not specifically familiar with connecting to a PC serial port, but NMEA + and - are signal and ground respectively.

I'm pretty sure that the terminology is interchangeable - I have a recollection of connecting a wire marked NMEA- to RS232 ground and everything working

Can't speak for a PC serial connection - but the NMEA - on our Avansea AIS is connected to the boat negative circuit (as is the plotter's NMEA - ) and all works fine. Wired this way because the plotter specifically said so - Avasea instructions were - as they say - silent on this.
