Any thoughts on this project?

Personally prefer vector charts. The concept of an annual charge for your software programme would really get up my nose unless there was a necessary updating of contents (e.g. virus software) The concept of being charged lots of money for charts that have been researched by my money (taxes) makes me a tad upset!

Bumble.

I have been using this system personally at work ( Diving and Surveying ) for the past 7 years , and it's great.

ARCS charts are excellent , and each chart you want is only £ 15

E:mail me off line if you want more info info@taurusdiving.co.uk

Re: Vector charts

there are 2 types of electronic charts:

Raster charts: Basically scanned paper charts.
Can be big files, should be cheaper, you can't show less detail (buoys, etc) as you zoom out. As accurate as the charts they're based on.

Vector charts: A mathematical representation of the paper chart. If they're done right, different things can be on different layers, so you can reduce clutter when you need to and show details when needed. Some are reputed (no personal knowledge of this) to be less accurate than the raster types, but neither should be relied upon to miss a rock by a few feet!

IMHO, if ever things are standardised to one or the other, vectors should win, but Betmax was the better system technically, so who knows?

Re: True

But the data is still harvested at taxpayers expence. The admiralty chart being the source of most of the data used in these various packages.

Much of the data on charts of busy ports is collected by the harbour authority or port managers, quite a bit of offshore survey is paid for by oil companies and other interested parties.

Another concideration is that much of the data for say the Channel Isles and other rocky areas was paid for by your grandfarther not you.
