With all the talk/arguments/views, with regard my last post re "Admiral"......I wonder if anyone on the forum whom is covered by "Admiral" has in the past had the misfortune to make a claim and been succesful?????

Paul.

Not had a claim but have found them to be fair, knowledgable, flexible and reasonably priced on lots of aspects such when rigging is replaced, the frequency of surveys, overseas cover, ocean crossing cover, leaving the boat overseas for an extended period etc, etc. Plus, it's easy to pick up the phone and speak to someone knowledgeable; there's no wading through layers of phone system menus and junior 'know nothing' muppets who can only give stock answers.

I see no reason to be alarmed because Admiral have denied a claim on the grounds that an owner breached an additional clause that was added to the standard policy because of his inexperience.

My Admirial policy contained additional clauses re when I had to get out of the hurricane zone and the level of expereince on board for the ocean passages. They were not hidden in the small print and were highlighed on the covering letter, the policy schedule and the policy itself. If the guy who went on the rocks actually had such a condition, he was probably made aware of it in a similar manner.

To date, I'm a happy Admiral punter.

Our boat was insured with Admiral when the previous owners had her. She was badly damaged inside after a fire started on board (forensic folk thought it was electrical) while at anchor in Carlisle Bay. If some kind folk ashore hadnt zoomed out to the boat with fire extinguishers she would have burnt completely and sunk, but they managed to put the fire out.

A claim on the insurers was subsequently made for the cost of repairs, and after much negotiation the Owners were paid out for the agreed costs of restoration of the vessel. I do not know how much they were paid, but they seemed to be very happy. They decided to offer the boat for sale, and that was when we came into her life. I think that the total sum of the selling price and the (estimated) claim settlement was probably more than what she would have sold for if she had been offered for sale.

We bought her for a very reasonable price, spent a year restoring her, and then insured her again with Admiral, who took her on quite happily. We were with them up until a couple of years ago, when we found out that we could get cover for the same amount locally for a smaller premium (whereas 8 years ago it was the other way round). The premiums in the UK do seem to have gone up rather rapidly since 3 or 4 years ago.

The conditions on the policy were clearly defined, re where she had to be in the event of a named storm, and they also mentioned a requirement for a competent named skipper (we had to supply a list of skippers, as the boat is owned by a partnership). And the folk at Admiral were always very helpful.

So I cannot complain about them at all.

From other threads you may have gathered I have Admiral insurance.

The reason I went for Admiral was that 6 years ago, I put a very big hole in the hull of my Hunter 707 in a port/starboard race situation. I was back racing 2 weeks later with absolutely no delay in getting the go ahead to have a professional repair.

That is why I've stayed with Admiral.

I'm now in my third year of insurance with Admiral.

My boat was damaged whilst unattended in her marina berth, presumably by some third party who bashed her whilst manauvering and made off without owning up /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I have nothing but praise for Admiral. Given the modest damage they waived the requirement for 2 independant estimates and accepted the sole estimate from the most conveniently located yard, even though I commented to them that I thought the estimate was excessive for the work involved.

They were very accomodating even though I messed them about and waited till the end of the season to instruct the repairer and then disputed the yard's invoice. They made immediate payment on completion of the work and honoured the "no excess payable if boat damaged whilst unattended in marina berth" clause on my policy.

I will renew with them next year assuming their premium remains competitive.

Edit - And I second the above comments about the knowledge and attitude of the people in the office, very refreshing in this age of call centres and offshoring in the insurance industry.
