I have a Volvo D2-40 engine 4cyl 1500cc which has run circa 1500 hours. The service schedule suggests that Tappets should be checked and adjusted ( I doubt it has ever been done). I understand the principal and have the workshop manual which gives adjustment details etc. BUT how do I turn the engine over to a small but at a time to actually get the right tappets opening and closing? When I did it on my 2cyl Bukh it had a flywheel to turn and 42 years ago I jacked up my my Morris Minor a small amount and turned a wheel while in gear. The Workshop manual just says 'Crank the engine'. Any idea?

Can you not put a socket on the crank pulley wheel and rotate engine ?
Ha, VicS beat me to it.
