Not the extras you apply to a particular boat because of its configuration but the way you adjust every boat during a race series according to actual results.

Does anyone have a recommended way for doing this or a simple piece of software?

You can enter the elapsed time in the finish time column so long as you leave the start time as the default 00:00:00 the calculated elapsed time will then be the same. Alternatively you can enter both actual start and finish times and the spreadsheet will calculate the elapsed time.

To produce the new handicap for the next race we divide the difference between the starting handicap and the achieved performance for the valid results by 4 and add this figure to the existing handicap.

Our club has researched this in the past. We are not using this at present but found this link helpful

It might also be worth looking at the 'Sail100' race results software.

We did use a system along these before using RYA YR2 method, the RYa system is bit more sophisticated in that the average is skewed to reflect the actual balance of results. Also it excludes "Poor" results, from experience it is better to exclude those results when the Yacht just didn't perform within its ability, this also makes it a lot harder for someone to try to "sandbag" the results by deliberately sailing badly.
