At present we have an ais receiver that does just that. Trouble is in busy areas i can't tell the big from the small.
Does anyone know of a unit that let's the user filter out class b leaving just class a on the screen?

I don't know of one that filters Class B, though some older models (if you can get your hands on one) simply don't know about it.

The Vesper Watchmate displays have better than average filtering, for example hiding targets below a certain speed or which are not a collision risk. You can set up four different profiles with different filter/alarm configurations, then switch between them depending on the situation.

If you want to use a laptop, I've also heard good things about OpenCPN's AIS filtering, though personally I don't like having PCs on board.
