I am fitting one of these
http://www.baselinemarine.com/shopexd.asp?id=961, and although there is a grub screw I was considering a bit of "glue" adhesive mastic for extra strength. Any suggestions or reasons why I shouldn't use sikaflex (which I already have). Is superglue on the grub screw a good idea as I was not intending to buy proper thread lock Loctite? Thanks for any answers and apologies for not doing more thorough research first :), I need to get off the computer!

The second job is simply to reattach the plywood battens to the grp above the headlining. Any harm in using the same stuff for both jobs?

Not superglue as it is not waterproof. Loctite 243, or if you never want to undo it 270 - both these are anerobic, so only set when the air is eliminated. Sikaflex will also likely work, but is a sealant adhesive, not a thread locker.

Your tool box should also have some 577 to seal threaded fittings and re-juvenate old O rings, and 601 to glue in loose cutlass bearings.

If you can buy a Loctite cheaper 'equivalent' for half the price AVOID. I don't work for nor own shares in Loctite, I just know they provide excellent products from long years of direct use experience both professionally and on my boats.

Sorry - missed the second bit- yes no more nails or heavy duty spray adhesive

I have been using CT1 for most sealing jobs for several years now and very pleased with the results.......best bit is that it can be left and reused, and it comes off your fingers!

I don't believe that sealing the joint with Sikaflex will add any worthwhile strength, but it will exclude water. This will help to prevent crevice corrosion and possibly galvanic corrosion, as my experience is that the grub screw is invariably has a different composition from the body of the fitting.

Sikaflex has negligible grab, so is far from ideal for sticking up overhead battens. One of the builders' products posted by prv would be far better, to which I would add Sticks like ***, which I find works very well, or Gripfill.

FairweatherDave: having mentioned Loctite, I think you already know the answer to your first question. How would you feel if your car came back from service with the rocker cover fasteners oozing Sikaflex? Don't bodge. Your boat (and yourself) will thank you in the long run.

Thanks all. I have gone the Sikaflex route as I had some. If the grub screw was on the engine I would have bought some loctite. Re the battens they only have to hold their own weight, not the weight of the panels, so I have bunged some in and can see if it sticks, and get some no nails or whatever if they are still loose. The battens are purely spacers. When I have finished my supply of Sikaflex I will try the CT1 but the Sikaflex stored in the freezer is lasting so well.:)

I have just stuck up my headlining attachment pads with Sikaflex and it not only grabs fine, it sticks fine too. So much so that I couldn't move one I stuck in the wrong place so had to stick on another. Sometimes you can over-worry about these things.
