Just about to veneer the inner side of my saloon using 0.6mm veneer. Any advice on a good glue which will allow positioning movement but has some grab and doesnt need a lot of weight or stappeling.
Any hints or tips will be welcome (I dont want to use rabbit skin glue though!!)
Thanks.

Having done a fair bit of veneering in the workroom I think you're right not to go with RSG! Yes, I use cowhide glue in the gluepot for veneering but then again I also use a veneer press and veneer iron - neither of which strike me as very practical if veneering your ceilings (sides) in situ.

You could try something like Titebond III - tack time of 30 mts, Alphatic Resin waterproof wood glue (Axminster Power Tools do it).

You'll really need to get the substrate pristine clean - every tiny irregularity will show through veneer like a mountain. And don't forget shrinkage - overlap the edges if possible and don't trim until after everything has dried. Both glue and rolling-out will expand / stretch the veneer.

To hold the veneer in place while the glue is setting, try fitting battens across the cabin from the opposite side. The batten should be slightly longer than the gap that it is to fill, and should be bowed to get it in to place. When released it will hold your veneer nicely, with no fastening marks. As the veneeer is so thin, it would pay to place a wooden pad between the batten and the veneer to spread the force.

If twere me, I'd use Thixofix. It's a contact adhesive that does allow for a bit of shuffling before you squash it down. Even so precautions like a sheet of newspaper between veneer and surface to keep them apart and prevent premature bonding, would be a good idea - then you can slide out the paper and press down veneer. I've used this stuff loads and it's ideal for this application. PVA etc could be a nightmare to clamp down - try a dry run before doing it for real.
Don't know if there is a water based Thixofix or equivalent; solvents might make you woozy in boat.

Thanks Spuddy, I have used thixofix many times. I need to check just how waterproof it is as I have used it only indoors.
As you say it dont half pong....lovley stuff!!
On this job I think I can cut to size and fit from and up to a fixed edge so I shouldnt need 'on the job' movement.
Cheers
