Had a lovely long weekend to Weymouth, confirmed that the Solent Monday-Friday is the time and the place to go sailing. Seals and egretsin the harbour and hardly a boat in sight. Dorset ain't bad either.
Returning from the west up the Solent at on Sunday almost (but not quite) spoilt a long weekend. We were running with the boom over the port side, the genny poled out to starboard. I reckon that made us sailing on the starboard tack.
First boat we crossed paths with was a large blue sailing boat under motor that invoked the "I'm a woman driver not looking where I'm going nor keeping a straight course so keep out of my way" rule (49b para 35) who we had to avoid.
The second was the "I'm a d***head in a big posh sailing boat on port tack so I'm going in a straight line regardless of who's in my way" rule (56c para 59b). He waved to us, I restrained myself from waving back in the manner required by the situation.
Both were just off Yarmouth. I can name and shame if it comes to it.
This was in stark contrast to the other 3000 or so boats we saw, many of which were Mobos, including the "Shieldhall", some of which slowed down but all of whom waved back cheerily and thus restored my faith in humanity. (Until I got the marina bill at Cowes, but what do you expect?)
