Could anybody give me some advice regarding what is normal for adding an uphaul on the mast. I have no spare sheave to take the uphaul; is it normal to fit an external one or do I have to take the mast down and fit an internal one?

Fix an eye to the front face of the mast so that a block can be shackled to it for the uphaul.

My boat is a lot smaller with lighter pole but I use the spin a lot in racing. I have a fixed topping lift. Simply a rope tied to a fitting near the front of the spreaders. The rope has enough lenght to remain tied to the middle of the pole which is parked on the side of the boom. Dinghy style. There are 2 snap shackles tied into the rope at suitable point so it can be set at low or high level . Low for running high for reaching. The long end of the rope means the pole can't be dropped over board. ie is always attached.
It is very convenient having a fixed topping lift in that it makes the foredeck person autonamous. The pole is lifted up until the snap shackle can be fitted to the middle of the pole. That takes the weight and the pole can be swung out to attach the sheet and then it is fitted to the snotter (mast attachment). Is that the correct name or is it a local thing? give it a try olewill

I have a track on the mast of my 30 footer. We just use a spring loaded pin as per the jib sheet tracks and get the foredecky to move it when needed. The cockpit staff have enough to do - share the workload!

Thanks for that; I think I might give the topping lift idea a go. The racing is on hold until the kids are a bit older so we're not wanting to do too much to the rig but I would still like to fly a spinnaker if I get the chance.
