Hi all,
Just signed up and this is my first post so be kind
I sail a classic Flying Fifteen on Lough Neagh, and I am looking to add some extra buoyancy to the boat.
Currently there are bags at at the bow and stern, but unlike the newer 15s we do not have any side buoyancy tanks, just open space with storage pockets.
After flooding the boat on Saturday in a bit of a chop, I have decided that we definately need to address this, as I dont fancy a repeat of 3 x coast guard ribs to drag us back to the maria. When she is full the front deck sits slightly under the water, with the stern slightly up.
The way I see it I can a) add some additional bags under the side decks - like used in newer 15s / enterprises etc or i can b) get some closed pore polystrene foam blocks (for free) cut down to size, and sheet in using some marine ply.
Any advantages or disadvantages to wither method? I appreciate b) being more work but thats not a problem. Is there such a thing as too much buoyancy?!
I'll admit I was brought up with double skinned foam filled power boats, then started sailing on a Nic 43 last year, so I have never needed to think much about buoyancy before. The 15 is my first boat and I am enjoying it immensly, although between myself and my crew mate we make up a very light crew at ~ 19/20 stone. So keeping her flat isnt always the easist task!
