Adding a rudder to outboard

Hi,

I have just got myself an old Creighton cabin cruiser, to use on the canals and rivers.
As this means travelling mostly at only 4mph, I'm finding it a little hard to steer with the outboard at these slower speeds.
I have been advised to fit a fixed rudder to the outboard. This will enable to boat to be steered alot easier.
I have an Evinrude 2 stroke 30hp fitted to the boat.
Is there somewhere that sells these rudders for my engine ? Also is there a name for these rudders ? I have tried looking on the net, but cannot seem to find what I want.

Any help or advise about these fixed rudders would be greatfully appretiated.

Thanks.

I had the same problem with low-speed steerage on my Shetland 4+2 with a Honda 20HP outboard. Fitted RudderSafe and it transformed handling especially around the marina and when going through locks where you need steerage at very low speed. Boat is now a pleasure to steer. It's easy to fit in under an hour to any outboard.. The only downside is the £160 cost... but it's extremely well engineered so can't really complain. You can get details at www.ruddersafe.com

I had a Ruddersafe on a inboard powered Bayliner. My experience wasnt great, one of the alloy fittings broke while it was being fitted, and the whole unit fell off within the 1st week of use. I needed this style of rudder because the boat was used at high and low speeds.

FWIW for just low speed use I would make my own, (A simple single blade attached to the engine leg would work), the Rudder safe is overkill for just slow speeds.

My father had somethging similar to Outboard Rudder on his canal cruiser many, many years ago. It was very effective even with the engine in neutral.

From experience I would not agvise using a prop guard as they are ineffective as a rudder, and if you do ever get something jam med in them you can finish up with a damaged engine.

I have got a rudder that fixes to an outboard that I don't use. My mate used it on his canal cruiser and said it worked well. Where abouts are you?

Many thanks for all your advise. I am watching one on ebay at the moment, which should do the job. Once again thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
