Hello All

I would like to know if anyone has ever added a second stearing position, and if so, what type of costs could one expect.

What would be the better stearing setup for this? Chain/cable or hydraulic?

Thanks
Charles

I have added a second (bridgedeck) steering position to a hydraulically steered cruiser (34ft, 13 tons) a few years ago.

I do not now have the exact costs, but Vetus supplied all the parts. You could do your pricing from there.

Parts required (from memory) were-

Steering pump, wheel with taper to fit pump, hydraulic actuator, hydraulic non return valve, several ball valves, plastic hydraulic tubing and olives, oil.

The costs involved are not readily available as I have recently moved house. The material costs were many hundreds of pounds and the customers total bill was quite high as it also involved additional morse controlls, windscreens and seating on the new bridgedeck.

I would not recomend a hydraulic systen as there were several disadvantages (but this was what the customer wanted)

The steering is very dead and lags a bit.

When driving the craft in tight situations I found that I had better control using the throtles on the twin engines as well as the steering wheels.

It was arranged such that there were no change over controls on the steering and because of this the wheels could not be marked in the dead ahead position as that depended on where the other wheel was set.

I would think that a mechanical system would be more cost effective and easier to maintain.

I may be able to find the costs but could not say when I would actually find them.

Iain

i know someone who took one out because it was a waste of space. unless you plan to install dual station engine controls, go with the autopilot repeater.
