All,

Still looking into this Martinique deal... There are some nice looking examples of the earlier models fitted with the AD41 engine.. How much would it feesibly cost to upgrade to a pair of 2nd hand or recon KAD 42/44s.. That should take her from a max of 30 knots to somewhere up to 40 given the right setup..

Any experiance of how the boat feels with the 41s vs KAD's?

Regards

Nick

The AD41's are bullet proof and reliable. Don't bother with KAD42's, go for 43's (similar but better). Not sure you would notice much of an increase in top end but would certainly get on the plane quicker due to the superchargers. With KAD 44's It should go pretty well but a lot more to go wrong and the extra expense on servicing. Why not just bite the bullet and go for D6's......

You should get a good deal on the current engines if they are ok, guessing around 4k each. IMHO.

D6's, cool engines, only real disadvantage over 43's is quite a few extra kilos, could be an issue on some installations...

KAD43 = 570kg
D6-310 = 750kg

Nick,

I just completed my first season after upgrading to a Martinique 38.
Before I bought it I was also looking at upgrading the engines. According to the guy at coastal rides the KAD 42/43 would not give a significant increase in speed although I suspect the 44 would.

I upgraded from a Portofino 31 with the same 41's so I miss the acceleration.
However after my first season I have decided that the boat is not underpowered with the 41's and it would cost a lot to gain a few knots. Also the 41's do seem to be bullet proof were as the engines with the compressors seem to suffer more failures. Do check the the tachs as mine were 400 revs out which is common for these volvo tachs. I spent the summer cruising at a slower speed thinking I was overloading the engines.

If you are serious I would talk to the guy at www.coastalrides.com. He seemed really to know his stuff and gave me prices on value of old engines and price for reconditioned and new '43.

As for the Martinique, wonderfull boat. Personally think the layout of the 38 is better than the 39. I was used to the huge cockpit of the portofino and not many boats match that.

AQAD 41's are superb engines, run like sewing machines.

I'd stick with those in a Martinique. Slower on to the plane but so what? Not much difference after that.

How do you check this? Does it have to be done by a Volvo Dealer?

Yes, you will need a dealer involved. Mine had an optical unit. He put a small piece of reflective tape on the flyweel. The meter has a light that you have to shine on the tape. My tach were showing 4200+ so I was contemplating moving up to A6 props. In reality the engines were running at 3890 which is perfect for that engine.
I am swapping my tach for VDO ones this winter as one is starting to fail. I had the previous ones (Portofino)repaired but it is not worth it. The tach is built by VDO to a volvo design but it is not as robust as their own models.

I would ask around. Does not need to be a volvo dealer. Or find somebody willing to lend you the kit. I used a local mercruiser dealer not my usual volvo guy as he was closer.

Maybe you do not need a dealer involved. ...

See Machine Mart catalogue, digital laser tacho @ £58.69. Very simple to use, laser beam reflects off white reflective patch applied to crank pully.

Only snag, suspect not all Volvo (or other makes) tacho,s have fine adjustment or calibration "screw" on rear of guage.

But at least you would know if the rev counters were over or under reading.

Had AD41's in my sealine S37, and they are great reliable engines. I reckon you would only get a couple of knots extra with the upgrade - its the law of diminishing returns when you add more power above 30 knots. Also quieter - I know of one owner who was looking to change to AD41's because he found the whining of the superchargers annoying.

There is a Targa 31 in Yarmouth (I think) which went from 42's to 41's because of problems with 42's. 43's are 42's with all the bad bits put right (I hope).

I'm now, thanks to eBay, the owner of a digital photo tachometer. When checking the engine speed do you do it whilst moored with the engines out of gear or do you have to do it whilst out on the water?

Not sure I fancy having to hang down in to the engine bay pointing my new tool at the engines whilst under way!

I'm afraid to get WOT under load you need to do it out on the water.
Use earmuffs as the noise is terrible. I was driving the boat when the engineer did it and still found the noise terrible.

If you are just checking the accuracy of the boat's tachos against the digital whojamaflip why does it need to be moving? Loading should not be an issue?

My engineer, always excellent, did just that on my VP TAMD61A's.

I have had AD41's KAD42's & 44s and can say that the 42s and 44s although the same lump out performed the 41''s on ever level- ran sweeter- the top speed and thus cruising speed were significantly higher- the fuel consumption was also by default better, the only suggestion is to have the compressor belts treated with a proprietary belt dressing then they will never slip. And of course change the engine oil religiously.
hope this helps.
