AD41 Starter motor not disengaging???

Engine starts OK but makes horrible grinding sound for anything up to a couple of minutes.
Then noise suddenly stops and sounds and runs fine.
I think it might be the starter motor not disengaging.
I am thinking one of these:
a) Power to solenoid stays on for some reason.
b) Solenoid sticking
c) Starter pinion sticking.

Cant be doing it much good so need to get sorted....any thoughts before I dive in spanners blazing???

I think as soon as you take the motor off it will become obvious. My bet is on your "b" or "c".
You probably realise this but don't rev the engine to try and throw the pinion back because the armature windings will over rev and 'explode'.

Thanks for that.....the problem seems to be solving itself with use.
I give the starter a couple of false starts on the key (not long enough to turn the engine any) before starting proper and the disengagement delay has dropped from 1 or 2 minutes to just a few seconds....should be working fine by next winter!! .......if only all problems were that simple!
